The commutator of a and b is:

If a and b "commute" then ab = ba and therefore [a, b] = 0.

The anticommutator of a and b is:

${\displaystyle \{a, b\} = ab + ba}$

Sometimes the brackets [ ]₊ and [ ]₋ are used instead.
