In mathematics, a square is the result of a number being multiplied by itself. The verb “to square” is used when describing this operation. Squaring is identical to raising to the power 2 and denoted by a superscript two; for instance, the square of 3 may be written as ${\displaystyle 3^2}$, which is the number 9.
